Syphilis: a silent epidemic on the rise

European health experts are sounding the alarm over the significant rise in the number of cases of syphilis, an STI that can have serious consequences if left untreated. Infectiologists at UZ Gent paint a clear picture of this worrying trend and its impact on the general population.

The complexity of syphilis

Syphilis is distinguished by its complex nature and can cause serious damage to the heart, brain, spinal cord, and bones if not diagnosed and treated in time. UZ Gent stresses the importance of early detection and the risks of untreated syphilis.

Diagnosis and treatment

Diagnosing syphilis is done through blood tests or a swab in the presence of an ulcer. Treatment is effective with penicillin injections or doxycycline, depending on the stage of infection. UZ Gent recommends that all sexual partners of the infected patient are also treated to prevent reinfection.

Prevention and risk management

Condom use is crucial in the prevention of syphilis and other STIs. Prompt detection and treatment are essential to prevent complications and further spread of the disease. Preventive measures, including the use of antibiotics after high-risk contacts, are discussed but approached with caution given the risk of antibiotic resistance.
