What is tested for?
HIV
- If you want to be tested for HIV, it is important to wait 3 to 4 weeks after risky sexual contact before having your blood sample taken. A fourth-generation test is used to detect both the p24 antigen and the HIV antibodies, in order to increase sensitivity. In the case of a negative test and recent exposure, a repeat test after 6 weeks and 3 months may be recommended to rule out the infection with certainty.
Syphilis
- If you want to be tested for Syphilis, it is important to wait 3 to 4 weeks after risky sexual contact before taking your blood sample.
